Keratin bonds vs nano rings — which is right for you?

Two methods, the same Slavic Remy hair included. How fitting, wear and maintenance differ between keratin bonds and nano rings, and which to choose.

Keratin bonds close-up — the bonds at the root at Hair Majesty, Bathgate

Keratin bonds vs nano rings is the question I hear at almost every consultation in Bathgate. I fit both, both give the length and volume you can see in my transformations, and both include Slavic Remy hair in the price. They differ in how the strand attaches, how it feels day to day, and what happens at maintenance and removal. Here is how they compare, so you arrive with a view of your own.

How the fitting differs

Keratin bonds are strands tipped with a small keratin capsule. I warm the capsule and mould it around a section of your own hair; once it cools, it sets into a flat, firm bond that tucks away into the hair. It is a heat method that asks for precision, so larger weights take longer.

Nano rings are purely mechanical. Each strand carries a fine loop; I thread a section of your hair through it and close a tiny ring over the join. No heat and no glue. The ring can be a little easier to feel than a bond, but just as discreet to the eye.

Fitting time is the same for both: an hour and a half for 50 g, up to four hours for 200 g. You choose from three lengths — 18, 20–21 and 24 inches — and five weights. Fitting starts from £200, hair always included; the full breakdown is on my hair extension price list.

Keratin bonds vs nano rings in everyday wear

This is where the difference shows. A keratin bond lies flat, and after a few days most people forget it is there — which is why it often works well on finer hair and for anyone who loves a high ponytail. In return it asks for a little care: oils and conditioners away from the roots, straighteners and tongs below the bonds.

A nano ring feels firmer, but there is nothing in it for heat to melt, so it gives you more freedom with hot tools. Oils and conditioners still stay away from the rings, so the strands do not slip. This method usually suits thicker, stronger hair. On very fine hair, or along the parting, the rings can show — something I judge at the consultation, on your hair.

The hair itself is identical in both cases: Slavic Remy with a lifespan of up to two years. That, and how you care for it at home, largely decides how long the result looks like day one.

Maintenance and removal

Extensions grow down with your own hair, so over time the joins move away from the scalp. That is when you come in for maintenance — I refit the hair you already have; nothing new to buy. How often? Usually every few weeks to a few months; we set the timing at your appointment, based on how fast your hair grows.

  • With keratin bonds, I remove the old bonds and form new ones — a longer job, from two to six hours depending on weight.
  • With nano rings, I open the ring, slide the strand back up and close it again — from two to four hours.

Maintenance starts from £120. A full removal, if you want a break, takes 45 minutes to 1 h 45 min and starts from £50. I always do the removal myself and never in a hurry — this is when your own hair is easiest to damage.

Which method is for you

  • Keratin bonds: finer hair, high updos, wanting to forget you are wearing extensions, happy to follow a few care rules.
  • Nano rings: thicker hair, fitting without heat or glue, more freedom with hot tools, shorter maintenance appointments.
  • Both: Slavic Remy hair included, the same lengths and weights, the same fitting times.

If you are still torn, that is a good sign — it usually means both methods are realistic, and we can decide together once I have seen your hair.

What an appointment with me looks like

Hair Majesty is one chair and one hairdresser — you are the only client in the studio. We start with a conversation: I look at your hair, ask about your colour history and tell you plainly what is realistic. Then we agree a plan and a price — you know the amount and the time before I begin. The fitting is unhurried, and before you leave I show you how to care for the hair at home.

To talk through your options, book a slot in the calendar — you can see the available times straight away. A consultation is a calm chat; afterwards you know which method suits you and what it will cost. You are welcome in Bathgate, West Lothian; clients travel from across the UK.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do nano rings damage your hair?

No extension method is entirely neutral for your hair, but nano rings need no heat or glue, so they put a different kind of strain on the hair than bonds do. What matters most is matching the weight to your hair and keeping to your maintenance dates — both of which I agree with you at the consultation.

  • How much do keratin bond hair extensions cost in Bathgate?

At Hair Majesty extensions start from £200 — that is the lowest figure on the list, for nano rings; keratin bonds at the same length and weight are slightly higher. Every price includes Slavic Remy hair, and the full breakdown for both methods is on the hair extension price list.

  • How often do hair extensions need maintenance?

Usually every few weeks to a few months, once the joins have moved down with your natural growth. We agree the exact rhythm at your appointment, because it depends on how fast your hair grows and on the method.

  • Can you wear your hair up with keratin bonds?

Yes — flat keratin bonds are hard to spot, which is why they usually cope well with high ponytails and updos. Nano rings can work too, but on very fine hair the rings may show, which I assess on your hair at the consultation.
